  • Domain age is becoming less important than before because of the amount of older abandoned domains, that haven’t seen relevant updates for years. That being said a well updated older domain is worth more than suddenly changing to a new domain.
  • Keywords in domain names do signal to Google that you a website about what you say, but it is also becoming less important as domain name recognition decreases
  • The length of domain registration matters to Google because spam sites are often bought for just a year, while long term domains make the site seem more legitimate
  • Exact Match domains are now less important than they used to because of the number of spam exact match domains in existence
  • Google will penalize based on WhoIs information – if you own several websites and they all have the same WhoIS info and Google sees some of your sites as spam they will punish all of your sites
  • Keywords in Title Tags, h1 tags and description tags all signal to Google what the web page is about, but the content on that page must also match the titles ie. the most used phrase in your page should be very relevant to what your titles say the page is  about
  • Content length is becoming more and more important.  Sites that are shown as the number 1 or 2 result in higher competition searches tend to have around 2500 words per page, with a minimum of 50 pages of well written, relevant, updated content

  • Page loading speed is becoming more and more important to search results – Google realized that slower loading pages tend to have high bounce rates, and that their customers want to click on as few links as possible before finding out what they want to know – the rise of mobile devices also makes page speed more important because mobile phones take longer to load on average than a computer and no one wants to wait for a website to load no matter where they are
  • Duplicate Content between pages on your site and with sites across the web is a signal of low quality domains to Google and they will be punished
  • How recently your content has been updated is important because it says that your website is being actively used and moderated – the overall size of updates also signals how fresh your content is and can play a role in time sensitive searches
  • Frequency of updates signal to Google that your site has been worked on and will continue to be
  • Inbound and outbound links signal site quality to Google – links from high quality sites or competitor sites signal a high quality site – while large number of links from the same the same websites, links from low quality or non-relevant domains can all decrease page rank
